USE OF THE SITE
This site is a tool to assist practitioners in schools and community based organizations with developing and implementing quality work-based learning experiences for all students. It is designed with two purposes: 1) as a detailed guide for individuals who are beginning to create work-based learning opportunities at their schools, and 2) as a comprehensive reference for individuals who are already providing work-based learning activities to students.
For staff beginning the process of developing work-based learning opportunities, the site offers step-by-step guidelines and sample forms from existing Vermont programs. For more experienced individuals, the site offers ideas for improvement as well as essential legal information. The descriptions on specific work-based learning activities have been designed to stand alone so they may be duplicated and distributed to appropriate practitioners as needed.
The site has been organized to follow the eight Gold Standards for Work-Based Learning in Vermont. Therefore the first standard section relates to the school’s role in delivering work-based learning. The second relates to the coordinator of work-based learning activities and the third to the role of employers. The sections for standards four through seven relate to students engaged in work-based learning and to alignment with career development sequencing, Common Core academic standards, and with acquisition of 21st century skills. The final standard addresses the various legal and risk management issues that come into play when placing students into community learning environments. A thorough understanding of relevant legal issues is necessary for anyone involved in work-based learning to minimize potential legal liability and to protect students, employers, teachers and schools.
Following the sections related to the standards are descriptions of the various types of work-based learning, a discussion of evaluation considerations, and references to resources and best practices related to work-based learning.
